I was a interviewed Friday by WUSA-CBS Consumer Anchor & Reporter Lesli Foster. The Living Smart feature kicked off DC’s tax-free shopping weekend, and focused on back-to-school supply savings.

Starting in my kitchen (!) and ending at a local CVS store for some school supply show-and-tell, some of the ideas included…

1. Shop generic. Flash is distracting in the classroom anyhow!

2. Go on a family treasure hunt. Rummage through drawers & closets – you can find all kinds of supplies to put to use again this year!

3. Create a family “compilation list.” Print out your supply list from your school’s website, and tally everyone’s supplies so you’re buying in bulk.

4. Protect your investment. Parents are responsible for replenishment throughout the year, so mark your child’s supplies with Sharpies or labels now to prevent replacement later.

What does your family do to save money on school supplies? Any creative tips to add to the list?
