Free “Parental Intelligence” Service Keeps Kids Safe

October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month, and uKnow.com is offering free “parental intelligence” to help parents protect their kids against online predators, sexting, and cyberbullying while also supervising their children’s digital privacy and reputation.  I checked out their site, and they have an impressive lineup of free features, and like anything, you can upgrade for a fee.

Here’s what they’re offering for free:

— Comprehensive social network monitoring

— Mobile phone and text monitoring

— Text lingo and slang translation

— Contact and message search engine

uKnow.com gives parents a “bird’s eye view of what is going on in their child’s digital world so they can…when necessary, take action to protect the safety and privacy of their kids.”  I receive a lot of news about parental monitoring, and I definitely believe in being open with the kids about the fact that when you use adult “toys” like cell phones and computers, your parents have a right to monitor.

Ideas?  Feedback?

Like uKnow.com, KiwiCommons.com endorses software for the home computer as a viable option to help protect children from online harassment and danger. By being able to choose which web content can be viewed with products like Kiwi Filter, parents are better able to shield their children from potential Internet threats. Web content and traffic filters generally use a blacklisting process, which means that they block websites based on an arbitrary list of IP addresses. Kiwi Filter uses whitelisting, which means that it filters the Internet in its entirety except for approved websites. This makes a lot of sense for younger children as it prevents unnecessary distractions and even the need to browse online.
