I couldn’t believe this, and the bully video is chilling. A 13-year-old Kopachuck Middle School boy was gagged with a sock, dragged around by a group of students who wrote with markers on his feet, held down with chairs, and then some, while students giggled, and the teacher basically participated! Here’s one video…
The teacher’s punishment: a 10-day suspension and a new job at another middle school. Really?! I understand that the teacher has an 18-year track record, but to see him “mugging for the camera” according to one report — clearly there’s another profession for this guy that’s more suited to his personality. And what about the bullies? Are they suspended?
The boy/victim is completely traumatized, apparently can’t sleep and told his parents he was “thinking about suicide” according to an article on MSNBC. That article reports that the acting Peninsula School District Superintendent Chuck Cuzzetto was “horrified” and classified the teacher’s actions as “inappropriate classroom management.” They also showed the teacher’s response, including that he was “tired from lack of sleep the previous night.” Ironic that this happened after the flag salute…did the teacher mean “liberty and justice for all” or did he miss that part? Where’s the justice for this poor kid?
I think teachers are our biggest heroes. I was amazed last night at our own school’s back-to-school night, watching the dedication and passion the teachers had for students. I just can’t imagine this happening, and I absolutely, postitively, in no way, shape or form, agree that this incident was innocent horseplay.
In thinking about topics for The Lounge, I’ve received some great story leads on anti-bullying…look for more on this topic in the months ahead. Really sad story today, and this is an opportunity for this school district to do right by this boy, his family, their district, and kids in general.
